Patricia Cornwell writes in an intensely sensual style. You experience it even in the first few pages. You will see, you will smell, you will (want to) taste, you will want to feel. As you begin this story, you will want to be with Scarpetta and husband Benton in their exquisite backyard, wishing for and wanting to take what they have. Until, just seconds later, Cornwell makes you sense and feel the evil lurking right there, right there in the midst of all the idyllic perfection.
If you are a Scarpetta fan, you already know that the perfect days are few and far between and darkness hovers around almost every corner. As a Scarpetta fan you’ve probably come to check out these reviews, wondering if the darkness is overpowering (like Cornwell’s novels of several years ago). There was a time I shied away from her books because each page almost seemed too heavy to turn. You also wonder if maybe the series was heading in the other direction: After all these books, maybe the stories would begin to take on a sameness or a shallowness? No, and no. You won’t find those issues with this book!
I hate to fling out opinions and judgments like “best”, or “my favorite”, but I will tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed this latest from Cornwell. It was a page turner, it had depth, it had logic. Cornwell is magnificent in her ability to weave personal thoughts and feelings into her scenes. She touches on all the facets of human nature–the good, the bad, the ugly–and drops it all in our laps as we sit comfy in our reading chairs.
Always hovering at the edge of my brain while reading this was the inkling of a thought: I know who is after them. But it escapes me until it is staring me in the face. (Who do I mean by “them”? All the main characters: Scarpetta, Benton, Lucy, Marino.
